Employee Spotlight – Derrick Perry, Project Superintendent

On September 10, 2017 our region experienced one of the largest hurricanes to ever come across the state of Florida. Thankfully the main headquarters of GCG Construction did not experience any structural damage. Unfortunately, residents and businesses in the southernmost tip of Florida did not fare as well. It is with no surprise that our team at GCG leaped into action to assist in the clean up and recovery process down in Key Largo, Florida. We would especially like to honor our very own project superintendent, Derrick Perry, for stepping up and organizing in the days after Hurricane Irma. He was instrumental in helping with the restoration process at MarineMax Ocean Reef in Key Largo by delivering tools, generators, water, fuel, supplies and a team of carpenters.

When asked, Derrick described his experience in the keys as follows:

“As you can imagine it was a bit dramatic arriving into the keys just days after Hurricane Irma trampled through. Everywhere I turned my head I could see the personal belongings of lives that were devastated, peppered throughout the monster piles of roadside storm debris.

Today those visuals are minimal and the hopeless feeling of loss is being replaced with a sense of urgency to get back to normal life. As the locals continue to open businesses back up and the volunteers, workers, strangers and neighbors continue to put the keys back together, residents are staying hopeful that the tourist season will help bring a well needed cash flow to these beautiful islands as they rebuild.

I am glad to have been a part of the relief effort, making my contributions through rebuilding, and spending money at many of the unique businesses that make up the Conch Republic.

I hope all who can make their way to the keys soon to see the impressive amount of work that has been done, to reflect on all that is good, and maybe enjoy a little dose of the island life.”

GCG Construction, Inc. is proud and honored to have Derrick on our team. His wide range of skill, attention to detail and leadership qualities highlight his contributions to the GCG team. Whether he is coordinating charity fundraising events or taking on leadership roles with community nonprofit organizations, Perry has a passion for giving.
